Does Prayer Work?

Monday, October 20, 2008

This weekend has taken a real toll on my mind. I am in a fog ... like Dad. I am trying to get back to some resemblance of a working schedule (... not because I want to, but because I have to ...), I miss MyBeloved and TheRunts terribly, and yet I don't feel I have enough time with Dad.

How can that possibly make sense? I am willing to bet that it makes sense for at least 68.3% of you out there. ( ... Remember, I delight in randomness ... and 68.3% is a random number ...) Anyway, I just wanted to share with you two amazing EyeOpens ... an event or moment that opens your eyes to some clearer understanding of ... of ... of whatever.

Just as I was thinking about Dad's prayers, my prayers, and your prayers this weekend, I began reading a note from my friend Oz. ( ... BTW, are you as stumped by Dad's prayers (1, 2, 3) as I am? That guy is out of this world. He has been preaching about it for years, but when the true test comes, he lives it too! I'm still blown away ... )

So EyeOpen #1 happens when Oz says to me ... "Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work." He continues:

Prayer is the battle; it is a matter of indifference where you are. Whichever way God engineers circumstances, the duty is to pray. Never allow the thought - "I am of no use where I am;" because you certainly can be of no use where you are not. Wherever God has dumped you down in circumstances pray, [spontaneously cry out] to Him all the time. "Whatsoever ye ask in My name, that will I do." We won't pray unless we get thrills, that is the intensest form of spiritual selfishness. We have to labour along the line of God's direction, and He says pray. "Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He will send forth labourers into His harvest." 10/17

I could leave this post here, without any further commentary, but it gets better ... enter EyeOpen #2 ... I received an email last night that provides much more clarity on this issue of prayer. Ms. Infantry, who I wrote about earlier, sent this message to millions of people ( ... well maybe not that many ...):

To my church family:

We hear names on our church prayer list - some we know, and others we pray for simply because they are God's children. Ever wonder if the prayers are helpful in a tangible way? Really want to know what happens when God's people pray without ceasing? Here's your chance to PRAY and to read about the progress from hurt to healing of one powerful man of God....

Ray DeVries, Pastor at Woodbine Cumberland Presbyterian Church was in a life-altering car accident in September. ... His son's blog sites catalogue his daily progress, family stories and most of all the Power of Prayer minute by minute in this man's life. It's powerful, witty and difficult to read with "secular eyes" ... [Pastor Ray] considers this spiritual warfare and is determined to be an overcomer....

What you can do: Watch prayer in action - read the blog sites often for updates on Pastor Ray's progress in the form of daily miracles.
www.growingandgrowing.com

Leave a prayer at:
www.poundapastor.blogspot.com They are expectantly setting a goal of 1,000 prayers. Forward this to those interested in praying, or to those whose lives may be changed by the witness of God's love and provision.

Peace and Love,
Ms. Infantry
I remain speechless at this point. To all the G&G readers, I think Oz and Ms. Infantry have been working together to stump me. You see, as I smash away on this keyboard, searching for answers in this ViolentSilence, I often wonder why I am doing this.

I don't to have look beyond GodThruMan (#18), or Hero, or Dad ... at the Wall, or Morning to Praise, or Rooting for Ray #5 ... to understand what's happening here at G&G.

Tears are pouring ... Darkness is disappearing ... Light is emerging ... Lives are being changed ... and people are loving ... all for His Glory!

To answer the question ... Yes, prayer does work! If you need help passing on the information to a friend or loved one, plagiarize from Ms. Infantry above. I am sure she won't mind.

100% Update: One Month-Anniversary

Photo: Swell Done!

Today marked the Monthsary ( ... one month anniversary ... ) since the ViolentSilence ... that near fatal car accident on September 20, 2008 that dramatically altered our lives and perhaps touched yours. Nobody really wants to celebrate a monthsary for an accident, so let's celebrate the monthsary of our new life. Here's an update:
  1. Dad sat up in a chair for two hours today ... Mom calls it a living hell ... for both of them.

  2. Dad ate a "Buffet of Spoons" for lunch, including: 3 spoons of MashedTaters, 2 spoons of MashedChikin, 3 sips of AppleJuice, 2 spoons of Puddin, and 1 spoon of Jello ... that sounds like a recipe for a stomach ache for someone who has not eaten solid food for a month ...

  3. Dr. Rehab wants to push Dad to the limits. He says that Dad has made amazing improvement, but that he does not want to cause a relapse due to pain medication. (Note to Self: Sounds fishy to me ... is that even possible? Lot's a people say Dad needs NoPainJuice! We need to look into that.)

  4. Dr. Rehab is going to contact our friends at the TraumaCondo to see if they can removed the neck brace.

  5. Nurse Mt. Pleasant really impressed Mom today with his respect for Dad (as a patient), his kindness, and his assertiveness. On this "second day after nights of no sleep" thanks for the precious caregiving Mt. Pleasant! (Note to the other nurses: Shape up! We are taking notes ... Good ... and Bad ... )

For those late night G&G-ers, let's pray that Dad (and Mom) get some sleep tonight. Something more than 2 hours. Adios.

G&G Stuff

A few of you in the World have emailed and called ... singing praises about all of our fashion design team members involved in the Logo Contest ... and wanting t-shirts and stuff.

There are many ways this could have been done, but the easiest way we found was through a little ( ... not so little ... ) outfit called CafeExpress.

This way, you can order whatever you want and we don't have to worry about the administrative-ness about it all. We don't need to worry about having hundreds of t-shirts in our garage and we can continue to update the designs as they are submitted. So, for those who asked for it, you can get your ...

100% Update: Just the Facts

No time to play with words ( ... which you know that I love doing ... ). Here's an update from Mom:

  1. Dad gets rest from about 10:00pm-2:00am. But then starts the long night of anxiety, loneliness and pain. ( ... we are there, but he feels lonely ... ) Last night was no different.

  2. The results from the blood tests to determine whether there are any new problems with Dad's heart came back regular. We are still waiting on the morning X-Rays.

  3. Dad sat in a medical, reclining chair this afternoon for 2 hours. He hated it! ( ... Can I say that? A pastor "hating" something? We can debate that later ... )

Small World ... Only God ...

Generally speaking, when you meet someone who has a tie to someone else you know, or to somewhere else you have been, or to something else you have done, then the standard response is, "Wow! It's a small world!"

At G&G, that kind of stuff happens all the time and we say, "Wow! Only God ..." Let's see if you can follow this one:

  1. On Saturday, I recieved an email from Ms.Infantry at Buffalo Valley Presbyterian Church, who says they "have been praying since the accident. Our minister Mr. W has been particularly compassionate, disturbed and prayer-motivated after I shared with him the challenge that has been placed before Pastor Ray, your family and the Woodbine family, of which I will always consider myself a part."

  2. On Sunday, I received an email from PrayerChair (Yep ... the one who helped send Dad to the Wall ... ). PrayerChair (and her circle of friends) have been praying for Dad since early in this journey. Apparently, PrayerChair received a copy of Ms.Infantry's email asking for prayers for Dad. Can you believe that? Small world ...

  3. It's like saying: PersonA prays for Dad. PersonB prays for Dad. PersonA and PersonB do not know each other, and I have never met either one of them. And I just found out that PersonB sent an email to the World to pray for Dad, and PersonA received a copy of that email from PersonC. Wow! Some would say, "Small world ..." We say, "Only God ..."

Rooting for Ray (#8)

If you are "Rooting for Ray" ... then send us your pic. Today's FeaturedFoto is a combo from our FamJam and the BakersDozen. Yep! We provided the baby and Mrs. Dozen provided by the bib!

Thanks for everything BakersDozen ... from the prayers ... to the food ... to picking up kids ... to the Food$$Card (... we have not had a chance to use it ... ) ... to just being there!

UPDATED (2:52pm): This just in ... new pics from MyBeloved ... here's the complete package ...

Whether you are family, friend, or perfect stranger,
we want to hear (and see) from you!

..............................
BTW, I keep hearing from BethelCollegeBoy that he and his friends are "Rooting for Ray," but I don't believe them. Wish I had some proof. In fact, I bet I would get a photo from his sister Bubbles before him. That would stink ... losing to a girl!

100% Update: The Cost of 50%-50%

I have a feeling that today is going to bring a few more new visitors to our little G&G website. Don't know why ... just a feeling ... so let's start with some basics.

  1. You are the World. I am known simply as Self.

  2. My Dad, a local pastor in Nashville, was in a near fatal car accident 4 weeks ago. I was at the scene a few minutes after accident, which has become known as our ViolentSilence.

  3. The high level trauma unit ( ... we call it the TraumaCondo ... ) gave Dad a 50%-50% chance of survival.

  4. We rejected that prognosis and instead proclaimed 100% Recovery. [ ... My uncle actually said 110% because he felt that Dad was going to be back better than before ... ]

  5. Unlike many other trauma patients at the TraumaCondo, Dad miraculously survived ( ... three others did not survive within hours of Dad being discharged ... )

  6. Dad was sent to a speciality acute rehabilitation facility ( ... we call it TheSelect ... ) two weeks after the ViolentSilence.

  7. Dad has now been at TheSelect for two weeks and was taken off the LungRobot ( ... I am sure you can figure that one out ...) early yesterday morning. That's right, only 14 days to wean off the LungRobot.

Now that you are up to date, let me give you an update from the weekend:

  • Mom received the bill from the TraumaCondo ... which does not include the bill for all the life-saving doctors. The cost for the 50%-50% prognosis was ... well ... Let's just say, we need HowieMandell to call us so Mom can pick one of those little suitcases from a row of beauties.

  • Dad started experiencing severe chest pains yesterday afternoon. Nurse Nashville ( ... we rename all our caregivers ... ) and the RehabTeam immediately jumped into action. Dr. On-Call was immediately called, X-Rays were taken, new HeartMeds were given. The team watched Dad carefully all evening and night. We have not spoken with Dr. Rehab this morning ... but Dr. On-Call believes it was chest pain from the broken ribs and all the work in rehab Dad has been doing, as opposed to hurt-heart-chest-pain.

If you have not heard about us, then you may want to know we are a praying family. If you don't know what a praying-family does, then click here. Even Dad prays. It has worked for us and it will work for you. If you have been with us since the beginning, or joined us somewhere in between, then you know what to do:

  1. Sustained breathing off the LungRobot
  2. Relief from chest pain
  3. Relief from total body pain
  4. Continued improvement on neurological responses

Thanks. Talk with you later.

The Game Plan

Sunday, October 19, 2008

Mom and Dad were chillin' out this weekend ... just like a couple of 42-year-married lovebirds ... when Dad decided to get all game-plan-ish on Mom. What is game-plan-ish?

It's when a lying in a hospital bed with millions ( ... exaggeration ... ) of broken bones, right eye funkified, left eye dazed, heart stitched back together, brain bruised, lungs working hard, feet and legs tingling tons, entire body messed up, fully frustrated pops asks his wife, "What's the game plan?"

"What do you mean, dear?" Mom responds.

"What is the game plan for getting out of here?" Yoda-voiced-Dad demands.

[World, you may be saying that your friend, brother, colleague, pastor, or just-heard-about-him-through-a-friend Ray sounds like he is getting better. The answer to that, World, is yes ... he is getting better ... small steps each day ... but we have a very, very, very long way to go. Dad just got off the LungRobot this morning, but we have to watch carefully over the next few days. Dad is not able to simply walk to the bathroom to ... well ... go to the bathroom. Dad is not eating food, except for 1 applesauce three days ago, 1 yogurt two days ago, and 1 pudding yesterday. Dad is not fully coherent, but he can pray like King David and Paul. He's my hero!]

"Let's talk about it!" Mom excitedly responds.

Over the next hour, the two lovebirds write out the GamePlan for the next few weeks. It includes the minor ( ... sit up ... eat ice chips ... work legs in bed ... ) to the major ( ... stand up ... eat food ... stay off LungRobot permanently... ).

If you know my Dad, then you know that needing the GamePlan is exactly him! ( ... And, according to Mom, it is exactly my brother ... Hi CaveBear! ... ) With a GamePlan, Dad knows what specifically to ask for in his prayers and he can continue on his determined recovery. Next on the GamePlan:

  1. Smaller tracheotomy tube
  2. Drink juice
  3. Eat mashed potatoes
  4. Sit up in bed for more than 2 minutes
  5. Stand up for more than 1 minute

World, let's pray this man to health. If you want to leave a prayer, go here.

Doctors Say the Darndest Things

If you did not hear, Dad returned his LungRobot this morning. Yep, no more assisted breathing. He is still on oxygen full time, but no assistance.

Another small step today was that Dad got to spend some private time ( ... well, it's not so private now that I announced it to the World ... ) on the BedsideThrone. During the private time, Dr. Rehab 1.0 came in, looked up, and immediately apologized:

"I'm sorry. Do you want me to come back? Wow ( ... looking at the BesideThrone ...) that's good! That ( ... pointing at the BesideThrone ...) is really, really good! I'll come back, okay?"

Like kids, doctors say the darndest things.

Find the Difference

Can you find the difference between these two photos? One was taken at 8:20am this morning and the other was taken at 8:21am. Circle the missing oxygen-full, air-pumping, breathe-assisting, LungRobot, piece of equipment.

[For those those individuals who want just the facts ... Dad is officially off his ventilator ... ]

100% Update: Weekend Slow-Down

Saturday, October 18, 2008

Dear World,

If you have been coming to G&G on a regular basis, then thanks for the support. Weekends are a little slow around here and that's a good thing. That means that you are spending time with someone other than me. And I am spending time with someone other than you. It's not that I don't like you on weekends, it's just that I like MyBeloved and TheRunts ( ... another name for Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 collectively ... ) more! And so, after a nice day with my FamJam, here's an update:

  • Friday Night: Dad slept most of the night ... except for that time when he tried to escape again. Nurse BriteIdea, who is going to make millions off his next bright idea, was steady and reliable all night. He helped Mom last night as well. Technician HighSchool and R-Therapist CarnivalCar held the fort secure while I cribbed ... for a couple of hours. Dad did a 20-hour trial without the LungRobot.

  • Saturday Morning: This day started right with Nurse Nashville, who has way too many things going on ( ... Nurse Student during the week, Nurse Nashville on weekends, and Nashville Star during the spare time ... That's right she sings! ... If there are any music scouts out there, give me a call and I will put you in touch with this Star... ). Technician StuddedSmile made sure that Dad had a nice, warm bath before Mom came in this morning. Thanks. ( ... Remind me to tell you how StuddedSmile got her name ... )

  • Saturday Day: Dad had good breathing all day and good stats (i.e., 99 oxygen saturation, 98 pulse, 98 blood sugar).

  • Saturday Evening: Dad talked to Mom about why he is here at TheSelect. He wants to know what he has to do to get out of here. Man, he's stubborn ... you were right MyBeloved ... Just slow down, Dad, just slow down.

Today is the first 24-hour trial without the LungRobot. We will let you know how it goes in the morning. Ni-Nite World. Sleep tight! ( ... whatever that means ... )

Self

GodThruMan (#18)

In case you missed the last GodThruMan moment, click here. If you are new here, then let us explain it ... GodThruMan is a moment when God works through man to demonstrate His existence, presence or power.

Do you remember OkieLuv and the the Praying-for-Pastor-Ray-Fever that has been spreading throughout Oklahoma? Well, our never-met-before-friend sent us this GodThruMan story:

PS... I have to share a GodThruMan moment. A friend of mine who has been seeking what has been "missing" in his life for many years and who we have witnessed to and prayed for over and over decided to finally look at the G&G blog.

He spent an evening reading the entire thing and then called me ... to ask me "Why in the world are those people sharing this with the world...and why are they not consumed with anger and rage? What do they have...what have they found that I can't seem to find that helps them be so seemingly calm and happy in the middle of a violent storm?"

I just smiled and said "I'm glad you asked...I think I have an answer for that..."

About 10 minutes later he was on the floor of his living room...phone dropped on the floor ... asking God's forgiveness and praying to receive Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior!!! Just wanted you to know a little piece of the impact that Pastor Ray and your family are having on the World!

To OkieLuv, thanks for the cherished moment. I shared this story with Dad this evening ... he smiled with his "Beauty and the Beast" smile ... and said, "Oh my! That's really neat!"

To OkieLuv's friend ( ... Do you mind if we call you RightChoice? ... ), I hope that you know this faith we have is real. It's not perfect, nor are we. There are times when we feel scared, angry, upset, fearful ... and sometimes just lost. It's during those times that we find solace ... peace ... comfort ... relief ... in the fact that the Creator of all Heaven and Earth has provided a means for us to get through these troubles. And if my Dad can make through the valley to the mountaintop, then there's no reason why you and I cannot make it there. If you are ready to jump into the Word, then check out a chapter in the NewBooks ( ... New Testament ... ) by a dude named John.

To the World, if you have a GodThruMan story that you would like to share, please email me.

I Had a Dream ...

... that Dad disappeared last night. We were in the same circumstances, same players, but the place was different. It wasn't TheSelect ... it was more like TheTrump ... each room had earth-tone walls, large cherry wood furniture, full size pull-out beds for the family, king size hospital bed for Dad, plasma screen television, ceiling fans, etc. You get the picture ...

During my overnight stay with Dad, I went down to get a glass (... not a styrofoam cup ...) of ice water. (... the ice was Sonic ice! ... ) When I came back, Dad was gone. What?!??! Mom is going to kill me. I run out of the room frantic.

TIME OUT: Earlier this week, Dad fell out of the bed. Based upon his body movements over the past few days, it has become apparent that Dad tried to get out of bed on his own. The same happened last night as well. I was in the family room, working on some work ( ... as opposed to some play ... ) when I heard a hospital bed moving. No? It couldn't be? I ignored it. I heard the noise again. This time, I jumped up! Ran into Dad's room! And .... BUSTED! BUSTED! BUSTED! There he was again ... Dad had raised the back of his bed and had started to pull himself up. I asked, "Where are you going?" He said, "Outta here." I asked, "Why?" He said, "To see if I can." I pushed him back down, situated all the wires and tubes, and smiled, "Not tonight ... not tonight ... " Back to the dream ...

Out of the room, I run frantic. Down the long hallway. I dodge into other patient rooms. Nothing. Where is he? Mom is going to kill me?!?! Keep running down the hallway ... one last place he can be ... the Executive Bathroom. I throw open the door and there he is ... lying on the floor. But he is smiling. Almost an evil grin. His teeth are gone.

"Dad, what are you doing out of bed? The doctors are coming and you have to be in your bed by the time they get there. Where are you going?"

He said, "Outta here."

I wake up to the sound of a bed alarm. Dad was tossing and turning. Man, that was a weird dream.

The Contest ... Logo #6

We are having a logo contest and we have already received 5 astounding designs. Logo #6 comes from VillageDelite, who we just met last week while traipsing through Mom and Dad's village. This one we call Pray4Ray Butterfly:

Note: I've heard that some of the World has been asking about how to buy some t-shirts with these designs. You must have been sneaking into my computer at night because we've been a'planning something for some time now. Just wait ...

Hero ... (part 3)

You probably already know about my hero. If not, then check here and here. I did not think that Dad's earlier prayers could be outdone. Go figure?!?!? PrayerWarriorToo was there today and he heard it. Listen to Dad's words of strength spoken today:

  • Oh, Lord, sometimes I cannot bear this anguish. Other times, I consider it a blessing and honor to suffer for you.
  • I take captive all thoughts that would cause me to forsake you.
  • Oh, Lord (... groan ...) how long?

It's okay, Dad, heroes get scared sometimes, too ...

100% Update: Late-Night Edition

I know ... I know ... it's 3:30am and you are asking, "Self, Why are you up so late?" Well, there are many responses ... any of which are credible: (1) Dad and I fell asleep at about 10:00pm and right now 5 hours is the maximum stretch; (2) my late night friends (... sarcasm ...) here at TheSelect are a loud group of caregivers; or (3) see number two above. Here's a teeny-weeny update:

  1. S-Therapy SoftSpeak denied Dad on the MashedTaters earlier today. Instead, he got a pudding snack and some cranberry juice through a straw. Maybe some of 'dem Taters on Monday, Dad.
  2. Mr. and Mrs. PBCookies, just a nice couple who are under the care of the Preby clergy, stopped by to be with Mom and Dad for a few moments this afternoon. PinkLady helped out tonight for a few hours. Thanks for your kindness.
  3. Mom gave Dad a manicure and massage today. Lucky.
  4. O-Therapy helped Dad sit up on side of bed. He also worked on taking off his socks. Success on that mission, but denied on putting them back on.

100% Update: World Makes Headlines

Friday, October 17, 2008

I am not going to sugar-coat Dad's struggle. You've seen his prayers. He feels alone and discouraged ... even though Mom is by his side every minute of the day ... even though #1 son hand delivers prayers from up North ... even though #2 son tries to make him laugh ... he feels alone.

Last night, Mom had an opportunity to share with Dad a little bit of all the prayers and cards of Dad's supporters. World, get this .... Mom mentioned you in her notes! You made headlines!

This morning brought new joys. Dad was able to sit up, stand, and use a BedsideThrone ( ... not gonna explain that one ... you figure it out ...). "What amazing progress," says P-Therapy Lil' Confident and her large friend Tiny. Here' s the rest of the update:
  • Dad was off the LungRobot for 20 hours yesterday ... back on for only 4 hours ... and now back off for a 24-hour WindSprint. Go Lungs! Go Lungs! It's your birthday! It's your birthday!

  • S-Therapy SoftSpeak ( ... imagine that ... a soft spoken speech therapist ... kinda like ... jumbo shrimp ... encouraging man ... obedient children ... ) says that Dad gets SmashedTaters today. After we told Dad, in his best Yoda-voice, he said ... "Right on!"

Off to work. Talk to you soon.

Please Help!?!?!?!

If you know what this message means, please help!?!?!?!?

Sometimes during the day, Dad does not have his TalkPlug in his neck ... so he cannot talk. He is then left with pointing to letters on a communication card. Well, yesterday, Dad spelled out the above word. I told Mom that was our family motto ... "UPKNOFINH" ... What do you think?

Hero ... (Part 2)

If you have read about my hero, then you may have a new hero, too. Dad's prayers last night and this morning are equally heart-piercing. You have to realize that between each of these words or sentences, there is intense groaning ... signifying the excruciating pain ... making us wince.

Dad prays:

  • Thank you Lord for saving my soul.
  • Thank you Lord for making me.
  • Thank you Lord for giving to me the great Salvation.
  • Lord, we trust you where you are leading us right now.
  • Thank you Jesus.
  • I am so sorry.
  • I am alone.
  • Thank you Lord for forgiving me my sin.
  • Thank you for your victory today -- we are more through Christ who gives us everything we need.
  • Thank you Lord that you find us worthy to make this sacrifice.
  • Thank you Lord for the victory.
  • There is so much anxiety.
  • Jesus is Lord.
  • Thank you ... (groaning in pain) ...
  • Thank you for the gift of salvation for those in Christ Jesus.
  • Thank you ... who are called according to his purposes ... thank you.

Dad, the World is praying for you.

The Contest ... (Logo #5)

Before today's update, let's start the morning right ... a new logo that just came into us late last night. That's right, we are having a logo contest! This one comes from SunShine, who spent time getting to know Mom and Dad while in Oklahoma. SunShine, and her hubby WorldWarrior, are happy to be back with their family in the Sunshine state '0 California. Here's what SunShine has to share with us:

"What a perfect contest... I love Ray (and your family), and I love to design things!

Thank you for keeping us so up to date. I check for Ray's progress every day, and also for a spiritual uplift. Thank you for your ministry, and for allowing Ray to continue his ministry even without words. God is doing wonderful things through your family!"

SunShine, thanks for the note. Thanks for the logo, too! World, here is Logo #5:

If you have a logo that you want to submit for our contest, send us an email!

Hero

Thursday, October 16, 2008

Dad is my hero. He is on a mountain top. At times, he feels lost in a deep valley. But today, he is as close to the Maker as possible.
..........................................

When I got that text from a friend this morning, I did not think twice about the words. After seeing Dad this evening, after talking to him through the pain, and after hearing his cries upward, I now know what my friend meant. The best I can say is: "Dad, you are my hero. Today, I, too, saw what it means to be a real man."

World, jump into my mind for a few minutes. See the blurred computer through my tearing eyes. Feel the lump in my throat as I swallow each breath. Calm the pounding in my heart. Hear Dad's prayers that he repeated today:
  • Lord, this pain is spiritual warfare.
  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
  • Hallelujah ... Praise God ... I will rejoice in the Lord in all things!
  • Through His stripes, I am healed.
  • Protect me and my family from the arrows of the enemy.
  • I thank God for everything ... meeting our needs according to your riches and glory in Christ Jesus.
  • God, give me closure from the things I am seeing and the pain I am feeling.
  • Oh, Lord, I need your rest. I need to be able to rest in Jesus.
  • Oh, Lord, my body is filled with anxiety. Please give me relief.
  • Overcomer, overcomer, overcomer.
Dad, keep praying those words. The World is praying for you. Your family is praying for you. Your caregivers are praying for you. I am praying for you.

You are my hero.

Update: World, I forgot to tell you ... If you are praying for Ray, leave a prayer here.

100% Update: Stand by Me

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darlin', darlin', stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me
(Ben E. King)
....................................................................

Dad had one of the BestWorst days since the ViolentSilence ( ... that terrible accident almost four weeks ago ... ) Ever had a BestWorst day? If you know what I mean, then you know what I mean. If not, then you can ask someone that does. ( ... It's not that I don't like you. It's that I'm too tired to explain it right now ... ). Here's an update:
  1. Nurses Goatee and ComeBack helped Dad (and Mom) all day yesterday and they were back today. Goatee reminds me of Captain Kangaroo -- only without hair and with a goatee. ( ... Don't get mad Goatee, I loved the Captain as a young chap ...). And ComeBack is named ComeBack because she's in training, she will be in classes all next week, and Mom (and Dad) want her to come back as soon as possible.
  2. P-Therapy Lil' Confident and Tiny came back today to help Dad stand up again. Two times for 5 seconds each. On Dad's second time at bat, Lil' Confident told Dad to imagine he was in the pulpit and the entire MusicCity was his congregation. Dad stood up straight and tall. You go, SheepDog!
  3. As was reported earlier, by mid-morning Dad was in excruciating pain. He told Mom that it was "spiritual warfare" and he "began claiming authority over the pain" and "repeating scriptures" to work through it.
  4. WoundGuy came by to take out the last of the stitches on Dad's head.
  5. S-Therapy gave Dad some ice and some yogurt with berries. Dad sighed and said in his vibrating voice, "It's wonderful!"
  6. R-Therapy Philip-Ino, who reminds me of LouDiamondP from La Bamba ... but with a shaved head, set Dad on a 20-hour trial of WindSprints. Dad will be done by 2:00am tomorrow morning ... while we are all sleeping ... except for UP (who will be up at work) ...

On this BestWorst day, Dad had a lot of firsts, a lot of steps forward, but it cost him a lot of pain. World, please pray for relief from that pain.

Dad, we will stand by you in prayer.

The Contest ... Logo #3 and #4

Two more logos for you. Logo #3 is inspired from OkieLuv, a longtime fan of Mom and Dad from their days at Eastlake Church in Oklahoma City. (History Quiz: What other great person has ties to Eastlake Church? .... Give up? ... That's right! MyBeloved.) Anyway, OkieLuv says that she has sent Dad's story to more than 25 churches and that everyone has the Praying-for-Pastor-Ray-Fever ... Now you understand this entry:

Logo #4 is submitted anonymously, but no doubt inspired by AngelJolie ... yep ... the one with the big lips:

If you have a logo for us, please send it here.

The Contest ... Logo #2

You saw Logo #1. Here's Logo #2, sent by our good friend just a little north of here in Kentucky. Pastor DuckHunt says they are praying for Dad and this logo shows it:

Keep 'dem coming. If you have a logo for G&G and Pastor Ray, please send your entries here.

I think one reason PR didn't sleep last night was he was too hyped up after "dancing" with the Twins all afternoon! A note to anyone reading, if you can spend even just an hour "dancing" with PR so Pat can enjoy the outside world, you will totally BLESSED as we were.

One of the Twins

There you have it. A full endorsement to come spend an afternoon of rehabilitation with Dad. Your life will be blessed and, hopefully for him, he won't be sliding all over the floor because you will be watching him. Leave us a message if you want join the fun. Or you can contact NurseVol directly.

100% Update: Two Steps, One Step

As they ( ... BTW, who is they? ... ) say, "Two Steps Forward, One Step Back." I am sure I could Google or Wiki: it, but don't have time now. You see, I not only play a lawyer in my make-believe world, but I am a lawyer in real life ( ... Don't boo and hiss! It's not Halloween yet! ... ) Anyway, since I have a couple of depositions today, the update is short and sweet:
  1. Dad had a very long, restless night. The best we can say is that he was off the LungRobot most of the night, but he was tossing and turning all night. And, if you know his history of tossing and turning, then you know that Mom was up all night with a watchful eye. Dad finally fell asleep this morning at about 4:30am.

Dad needs rest this morning, but he also has to get ready for today's challenges. Since you have all been waiting for a picture of Dad ... here it is! Rest well SheepDog ...

100% Update: Pork Chops and AppleSauce

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Well, maybe not the pork chops, but definitely the AppleSauce. That's right, today we had two more firsts:
  1. Someone else other Mom, CaveBear or Self watched Dad for the first time. Mom snuck away to get a shower and new set of clothes while TheTwins watched over Dad ... It's a good thing they were there, too, because he tried to escape again! ... Apparently, Dad swung his right arm and right leg over the bed side, but this time he was foiled!

  2. Dad ate food for the first time in almost a month. AppleSauce! S-Therapy says that maybe Dad can have a meal by Friday. HospitalFood ... lucky Dad!

That's all for now. Will touch base later tonight.

Rooting for Ray (#7)

If you are "Rooting for Ray" ... then send us your pic. Today's FeaturedFoto is from PumpkinLuv in Clinton, Arkansas. Dad performed her and her hubby's marriage ceremony a little over 10 years ago. After receiving word of Dad's accident, they write to us with their continued love and prayers.

Thanks PumpkinLuv and Lil' Pumpkin! By the way, Dad performed mine and BeLoved's ceremony as well. I wonder how many of us are out there?

Please send your "Rooting for Ray" pictures here.
Whether you are family, friend, or perfect stranger,
we want to hear (and see) from you!

East Coast

Haven't heard much from the East Coast lately. What, your Ostrich and UP get back, so you have no reason to call, write, or send money? That's messed up! Oh, BTW, Dad talked this morning and stood up with the physical therapists.

GodThruMen (#17) -- Dad Sits & Stands!!!

In case you missed the last GodThruMan moment, click here. In case you are new here, GodThruMan is a moment when God works through man to demonstrate His existence, presence or power.

Today, we experienced GodThruMen ... That's right, there was more than one person helping today. With the help of P-Therapy Lil' Confident and her friend Tiny,* Dad sit up in his bed ... and get this ... DAD STOOD UP! Can you believe these two GodThruMan helpers? Right by his side, his arms in their arms, Dad stood up.

Dad, your drive and determination reminds us of our friend Cuba in that movie Sea Fight of the Century: GoodingJr v. DeNiro. In fact, doctors, nurses, therapists are all amazed at how well Dad did on this first day of real physical therapy. After standing twice ( ... with the help of Lil'Confident and Tiny ... ), Dad was ready to rest.

*You know, most big dudes called "Tiny" are really, really, really big ... same with Technician Tiny ... This is not him, but looks a lot like him!

100% Update: Try Again Today

Dad was supposed to do WindSprints last night until 10:00pm, but he was only able to make it to abut 7:00pm ( ... we later found out because the oxygen had been turned off part of the afternoon ...). Last night, the therapists said they would try again in the morning. Well, today is here and let's give you an update:

  • Dad started off the LungRobot this morning at 7:00am. He will try to make it a full 12 hours.
  • R-Therapists Scripture and Trainee put in the TalkPlug ... also called a Passy-Muir speaking valve ... which allows Dad to talk ... I previously heard reports of Dad talking, but to hear those vibrating words myself was AMAZING!!!
  • Dad said: He eyes were blue. Faith's eyes were blue. He is in pain. He is anxious. I shared with him our verses from yesterday.
  • WoundGal ... always with a smile ... said that the last two surgical woulds are healing nicely. (... Can't remember if I told you, but they took out the stitches from Dad's head ...)
  • Dr. Rehab says that Dad is doing "tremendous" and that "we are now heading uphill on the road of recovery." Mom likes to hear such positive feedback from the Doc.

We are waiting for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.

The Contest ...

We are hearing back from a few people about The Contest (... click HERE for more info ...). There is no limit to the number of entries per person ... there is no age limitation (so get the kids involved) ... there is no geographical limitation for your entry (yes, you can send one from anywhere in the World)! Even if you don't win, all entries will be posted for the World to see. Here's the first one:

Dear Goldilocks

Your job is just as important as Dr. Rehab, Nurse Goatee, or R-Therapist Scripture. Thank you for cleaning Dad's room, the FamRoom (... where we eat our meals ...), the bathrooms, and the hallways. Thanks for cheering up Mom the other day after the Fall. We hope that you have a great day!

Smoking

Respiratory therapist blowing fresh air into Dad's lungs = GOOD

Respiratory therapist blowing smoke into their own lungs on break = NOT GOOD

100% Update: You're Not Alone!

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

For those who want "just the facts" -- here they are:

  1. Doctor confirms no new head injury from fall.

  2. Dad's lungs are getting stronger.

  3. Dad is really tired this afternoon.

  4. Dad spoke a few words this afternoon with the speech therapist.

For those who want the more personal, extended version, with Self waxing poetic through an otherwise boring medical update -- here it is:

  1. Dr. Rehab finally compared all of the CT Scans and there is no new damage appearing in the films. Thus, there is no evidence of a new head injury.

  2. Dad is beginning to cough up more LungJunkGunk -- as opposed to having it sucked out by tube. Thus, according to R-Therapist RedWisdom, his lungs are getting stronger.

  3. Dad is currently doing 12 hours of WindSprints without the LungRobot. Thus, he is getting tired this afternoon.

Get some tissue for this last one. [ ... Really ... it got me all messed up ... ] When working with S-Therapy earlier today, Dad had the following conversation:

Do you know your name?

Ray.

Are you in pain?

Yes.

Do you know your birthday?

41743.

Do you know who this (pointing to Mom) is?

Wife.

How long have you been married?

1967.

Are you okay?

I feel so alone ... Don't leave me.

. . . . . . . . . . .

Dad, we have not left your side. We are not going to leave you. Your mind is starting to move faster than your body can recover. It will be frustrating. It will be hard. You will be in pain. But ... we are not going to leave you!

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." (Deut. 31:6)

"The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." (Deut. 31:8)

To Pastor WormDirt

It was good to see you and your family this weekend!

A Morning to Praise

It was a very difficult night for Mom and CaveBear (... my brother ...) and Dad was restless most of the night. It's hard get sleep when they are waking you every 2 hours. Upon physical exam, Dad still responds to many commands, but not with the same zeal and ambition as B.F. ( ... before fall ...) I will have a report later today after the morning rounds with the RehabTeam.

But for now, we celebrate and rejoice! Today is a new day and the morning brings God's hesed. (Psalm 92:2). Hesed is the Hebrew word for lovingkindness. It is the consistent, ever-faithful, relentless, constantly-pursuing, lavish, extravagant, unrestrained, furious love of our Father God!

When we were at the TraumaCondo (... trauma unit ...) a few weeks ago, during a very dark time, Bubbles left a note on my computer. She wrote a praise song for Dad, which goes a little something like this:

Hallelujah with lift our hands
Even when we do not understand
Though the doubts may come and fill our heads
Our hearts are trusting you instead

We sing Hallelujah
Grace abounds
We sing Hallelujah
Peace we’ve found
We say God is with us
Protection here
We say Thank you Jesus
You’re always near

Hallelujah we lift our hands
Even when we do not understand
Though the doubts may come and fill our heads
Our hearts are trusting you instead*

Amen, Bubbles! We cannot wait for the day when you get to sing this to Dad ... and to the World. I am sure they want to hear it too ...

Do I Hear a Contest?

That's right. We here at G&G are not all about just fun and games. Sometime we report on Dad's medical condition. But right now we are back to fun and games. Here's the deal:

  1. We want you to design a new logo for us.
  2. The winner will be selected by a team of professional winner selectors (Dad, Mom, CaveBear and Self)
  3. The winner will receive a gift certificate to dinner at a great restaurant and loads of DVDs and movies. [Note to WordSr: Can we talk?]
  4. The logo should incorporate the word "PRAY". Here's an example, thanks to BigVolFan:

... show there is a small hematoma on the right side of the brain. RehabTeam is locating all of the CTScans from the first day to determine whether this represents new bleeding or trauma, or whether it is part of the old injury.

The plan is continue monitoring Dad all night and continue neurological testing ( ... like at the TraumaCondo ... trauma unit ... ) every two hours. Please pray.

Let's regroup in the morning.

100% Update: The Stock Market

It's 9:56pm. Giving you an update now is similar to telling you about how well the stock market did this morning even though you know that it closed 700 points down when the bell rang. In Dad's case, it is reporting that he got some rest last night, made some great improvements this morning, but ended up closing 700 points down at the end of the day.

The good news:

  • Dad met with S-Therapy today and passed two "blue" tests: (1) blue ice test; (2) blue water test. The first test was to chew some blue ice. If the coloring leaked into his LungRobot tube, then it is a sign that the throat is not ready for food and drink. Second test is the same, but Dad drinks blue water. Dad passed both tests!
  • Because he passed both tests, S-Therapy did some speech testing. You heard the results from that test this morning.
  • Dr. Rehab 1.0 reported that Dad's lungs continue to sound "clearer" -- LungJunk is beginning to clear up!
  • Mom bonded with a few new caregivers last night and today: Technician TooTallToo, with whom Mom fought about the height of Dad's bed; Technician FunkyGlasses, who carefully cleaned Dad's body; Nurse Preacher'sKid, who loved on Mom all day, held her hand during the afternoon trauma, and walked with me to CTScans; and R-Therapist Huggs, who just gave Mom hugs.

The not-so-good news:

  • At 2:31pm today, Dad tried to walk ... by himself ... while asleep.
  • At 2:32pm today, Dad failed in his attempt to walk ... by himself ... while asleep.

[Note: Like the circumstances surrounding the original accident, ViolentSilence, we really don't know what happened this afternoon. We can only speculate that Dad flipped his legs over the bed and fell to the ground. When asked by CaveBear whether he was pain, Dad shook his head, "No." When asked by CaveBear whether he was trying to talk a walk, dad nodded his head, "Yes." Again, we don't know ... ]

Rooting for Ray (#6)

If you are "Rooting for Ray" ... then send us your pic. Today's FeaturedFoto is from the Charleston LoveBirds, who say:

"I have already posted my prayer and have sent on the message. God is moving in amazing ways through your website. I know at times it is hard to see but God has taken this tragedy and turned it to be a beautiful thing. Even though Pastor Ray can't talk he is speaking to people all over the world through you. God is Amazing. I truly believe that God takes what is meant for bad and turns it into something good and wonderful."

We love the LoveBirds! Oh, BTW, Dad did say "Hi" and "I love you" today.

Whether you are family, friend, or perfect stranger,
we want to hear (and see) from you!

??????????????????

More questions than answers right now. Dad appears to be resting, while we wait for the RehabTeam to take him for a head CTScan. The best we can surmise is that he threw his legs over the side of the bed ( ... more than likely to go for a walk ... aggressive fellow ... ) and he fell. Dad does not appear to have any visible injuries right now, but we don't know about any new internal bleeding or broken bones or re-broken bones. Dr. Rehab ordered the new scan and now we wait. And wait.

Update (5:31pm): We took a ride ( ... actually a ride for him and a walk for me ... ) to get the scan. We are back at the room, settled in bed ( ... actually in bed for him and in a chair for me ...), and waiting for results.

... humbly asking ...

... to please pray ... Dad fell out of the bed a few minutes ago ... they are assessing his condition ... please do not call Mom right now (as she is very upset) ... we will let you know ... thanks

Dad Speaks!!!!!

Self (me): ... in the middle of a deposition ... Yes, I had to put on a suit today!

You: ... supposed to be working, but surfing G&G ...

Mom: ... sitting with her hubby of 42 years ...

CaveBear (my brother): ... texting me the following message ...

Dad just said "HI' to mom. And he just said "I LOVE YOU" OUT LOUD.

Whoa!?!?!?!?

Dad's No Leper ...

... but he has been quarantined ... well, kinda.

In Leviticus 13, isolation was a remedy for leprosy for God's people. A priestly dude would look for signs of yuck on the people's skin or their clothes, which would mean they were NotClean. Upon the priestly dude's announcement, the NotClean would be removed from the community: "He shall live alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp." (Leviticus 13:46). Although Dad is not NotClean ( ... that's a double negative ... interpreted as "Dad's no leper" ...), there are some precautions to visiting him.

That's right, you can (AND SHOULD) now visit Dad (and Mom) at TheSelect, a/k/a, Select Specialty Hospital, 2021 Church Street, Nashville, TN 37203. It is at the corner of 20th Street and Hayes (between Church and West End). Since I am known as the disciplinarian at home, I will take that burden here as well. The ground rules for your visit are:

  1. No plants, flowers, balloons ... all due to the controlled air environment and LungRobot ... Sorry Botanists, Florists and Clowns!

  2. No wee-ones or sickies. That means if you are even thinking about sneezing or coughing, please be like Leviticus 13:46 and stay at your camp until you are better.

  3. If you are sicker than Dad, we will come to see you.

Once you get there, go to Fifth Floor, Room 5509 at the the end of the hall by the Nurse's Station ... Mom/CaveBear/Self should be there. If not, there is a family waiting room to the right.

[Note: I'm no grumpy. Just trying to protect Dad's recovery with the above rules. Although she would never ask for it, Mom would like some company ... even if you can stop for a few minutes ... go grab lunch or dinner with Mom ... or just pull her downstairs for a walk around the block ... She could really use the support. Thanks! ]

Rooting for Ray (#5)

Sunday, October 12, 2008

If you are "Rooting for Ray" ... then send us your pic. Today's FeaturedFoto is from Mr. and Mrs. BeenThere/DoneThat in St. Peters, Missouri.

Here's what our never-met-before friends from St. Peters have to say:
H e l l o !!!! This is "been there""done that" (the hospital gig, that is.) Know I wasn't in nearly as bad a shape as you are. But for me it was a hard uphill jog. It was God's hand that reached down for me, lifted me up and said "got more for you to do, don't quit on me now." Was near "the Select" Vanderbilt University Hospital , for two long weeks. You hang in there and know the "World" is helping do our share as God does his share. Hey look at my wife, she is so happy you are God's child and in His care. Love from people you don't know but who love you just because you are you ...
Been There/Done That, thank you for the BIG SMILE! We really needed it!

Please send your "Rooting for Ray" pictures here.
Whether you are family, friend, or perfect stranger,
we want to hear (and see) from you!

100% Update: CaveBear Returns to MusicCity

That's right! CaveBear came from MSP to BNA via NWA! Did you get that? In other words, for the abbreviation-impaired, my brother Chris came from Minneapolis to Nashville today by Northwest Airlines. He's here to take a little bit of the stress for the next couple of days. [ ... Thanks SisterFargo for loaning him to Mom again! ... ]

CaveBear has a bunch of cubs at home himself ... three to be exact. Pickles, his No.1, has been reaching out to her classmates to get a little encouragement for her Pappy Razor ( ... Pastor Ray ...). Here are some of their cards. Thanks Pickles and Pickles' Class!

Alright, enough of the ribbons and flowers and pink wires, let's get down to the update:
  • I stayed the night at the hospital. Dad was restless, but no fever.
  • Nurse Technician Spirits was with us for her third night in a row ... Mom's right, she's great! R-Theparist Mouse did not sneak in and out like a mouse this time, but stayed to talk with me. She's soft-spoken and quiet, but cute smile. Nurse RecoveryDude, who suffered a severe head injury like Dad many years ago, had a good sense of humor, right amount of assertiveness, and knew what he was doing. This team made Saturday Night Live Crew seem like amateurs.
  • I can't remember if I told you, but Dad had two 4-hour periods of WindSprints (... trach trials ... or time without the LungRobot ...) yesterday. I talked with R-Therpaist Q1 this morning about the plan for the next few days. She says that today Dad will attempt one 8-hour period of WindSprints and, if he does well, then he will do 12-hours on Monday.
  • Dr. Rehab 3.0 came in early, early this morning ( ... I was still getting my beauty sleep ...). He had the following to report: "___________________" That's right, NOTHING! I guess, under the circumstances, nothing good is betther than something bad!
  • Wound Nurse HumsAlot replaced the bandages on Dad's surgical wounds ... they are healing without infection ... the cut on Dad's forehead from the ViolentSilence is almost fully healed and the stitches may come out on Monday or Tuesday.

Prayers for this Sunday evening:

  1. Protection from LungJunk infection
  2. Protection from EyeJunk infection
  3. Protection from MouthJunk infection
  4. Protection from EarJunk infection
  5. Protection from AnyOtherJunk infection

Something to Think About ...

"It's 3:30pm and there still are no updates on Pastor Ray's condition," you say.

"It's Sunday ... you should be spending time with your family and kids," I say.

World, here's something to ponder while I type up this afternoon's medical update:

"My problem with life is not that it is rational or irrational ... but that it is almost rational." (G.K. Chesterton).

Pound A Pastor Update

If you are new here, then make sure you surf around to see what's been going on with Pastor Ray and with our little family [ ... Get it? That's a joke. "Little" family ... ha ha ha ... ].

If you have been following us since the beginning of the ViolentSilence, then thanks for sticking with us. As of this morning, we have 68 prayers and comments at Pound a Pastor, as well as more than 50 cards, from around the country.

If you have not had a chance to leave a prayer or comment, then do so here. We need to spread the Word around the world through our little goal of 1,000 prayers. Be a part of Sheepdog's recovery by pounding him with prayer!

Dad, Get Ready for a Revolution!

Saturday, October 11, 2008

Hey Dad! Since they can't see you ... they wanted you to see them! Dr. Rehab 1.0 says "slow is good," but we are going to crank it up a notch for a minute. Get ready ...

video

The book of Revelations, Chapter 16 And 17 (Yes Sir!)
They shall hunger no more,
Neither shall they thirst anymore! (Preach, Preacher)
For God shall wipe away (Yes Sir)
Every tear from there eyes (Yes Sir)
Get ready for a revolution.

100% Update: Reading Mom's Notes

Since I was not at the hospital today, and I have not had a chance to catch up with Mom [... What's up, Mom? How you been? Did you have a good day? Your hair looks great. Dylan won his soccer game today and, get this, he scored 2 goals!!! ... ], I have little choice but to give you an update by her notes. Here we go:
  • Call from Pastor and Mrs. JacuzziScream ... old friends from New Mexico

  • Visit from Pastor and Mrs. Dark-M&M's ... old friends from New Mexico ... now living in 'Bama ... drove up for the day

  • Dad was resting big time as a result of the 4 hour WindSprints

  • Dr. Rehab 3.0 says that right lung sounds "pretty clear" and left lung sounds "less dense" = LungJunk may be clearing up soon ... keep praying ...

  • Nurse Fill-In cleaned out Dad's ears ... lots of yucky stuff in there

BTW, Dr. Rehab 3.0 says that he has "seen lots of miracles come out this hospital." We agree ... we're one ... and will be one!

Mom Speaks ... Again

Photo: Daily Portrait Project of Julia Kay

"My man is coming back. I told him that I am learning to drive the Interstate and Freeways. He smiled so big."

[Editor's Note: If you know Mom, then you know she does not drive the interstate, highway or freeway to get anywhere. Dad apparently found humor admist his circumstances.]

100% Update: Whatcha Talkin' Bout?

Dad and Mom’s devotion – which I read because Mom was cribbing at home last night – talked about rejoicing and celebrating in distress. [ … Whatcha talkin' bout, Willis? … ]

Well, ArnoldJackson, if you know Pastor Ray, he's talking about: “Rejoicing the Lord no matter what your circumstances.” After we read the Scripture and prayed, Dad began tapping his feet at the foot of the bed and his right hand on the pillow. I asked him if he was in pain … he shook his head, “No.” I asked him if he was dancing … he just kept tapping. I think he was rejoicing and celebrating in distress.

Tech Spirits checked in on Dad (and me) all night long. Nurse IrishMama came in to say goodbye this morning … she was tired after a 3-day shift and was looking forward to some downtime. Respiratory therapist GottaGo ... went. Nurse Riddler stopped by, not to answer any questions, but to "check in on Pastor Ray." Here’s the update:

  • Dad was a little bit restless. He kept tugging at his LungRobot tube.
  • Dad had a minor fever this morning. He got some TempJuice (…Tylenol…)
  • Dad’s eye is clearing up … little by little.

Today, Dad will be cared for by Respy RedWisdom (like BlondeWisdom at the “other place”* but red), Nurse Fabulous, and Tech Help. As of 8:30am, Dad started a 4-hour WindSprint, which you will remember is like life without a LungRobot. It’s part of the weaning process. Prayer requests today:

  • Continue to fight the LungJunk
  • Clear the fluids from Dad’s mouth, throat, and lungs.
  • Allow Dad to control any pain, as they are trying not to give him any NoHurtJuice

…………

*We’ve learned not to mention the “other place” by name around here. It just makes people upset because they think we are comparing the two. Note to TheSelectStaff, you are going a good job ... your job ... your job is not to be the TraumaCondo ... that's the TraumaCondo's job.

An Olive Branch for Ms.Teach

Dear Ms.Teach:

I could not stop thinking about the "Circle of LeftOvers" last night. Mom shares with me everyday how to pray for you and your hubby. After I settled down last night, I started to think about the name MotorComa, which I gave your husband the first night we arrived at TheSelect. But that really is not fair, I thought to myself, because this is only a temporary condition for this man who was in a motorcycle accident.

Picture: Motherloom Studios

Ms.Teach, please accept my apologies for limiting your recovery. I would like to call your husband MotorLife … because he will continue to grow everyday and live strong.

From the very beginning of the Word we are told that “the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Gen. 2:7) So, too, with your hubby, God has the power to breath life into MotorLife and return him to a living being.

As Mom would say to my brother and I everyday as children, “Keep your corners up! … [ … the corners of your mouth … as in SMILE …]

Circle of LeftOvers

I did not know this was going to happen, but as I was typing out today's (albeit tardy) update, a bunch of LeftOvers came into the family room. That sounds so impersonal, so let me explain. Remember, LeftOvers are the family and friends of trauma victims ... the ones left behind to wonder and worry. Let me make these LeftOvers a little more personal:

(1) FarmFam have been in this boat for about a month. FarmDad, around 32-years-young, suffered a stroke that resulted in a severe brain injury. The farm is about two hours away, but FarmFam's church has helped them temporarily move to the MusicCity. FarmMom stands by her hubby's side ... praying over him.

(2) MotorComa has been playing this skewed game since his motorcycle accident. His beloved, Ms.Teach, has been fighting, loving, crying, living, sleeping, dazing, and just getting by for about 2 months now. Each day brings a new set of circumstances for these LoveBirds. I admire her love, determination and fight for her guy.

Tonight, this circle of LeftOvers, including Self, shared a little bit of their heart with the others. We laughed. We got awkwardly quiet. But we did not cry. [ ... I guess that's because Mom is not here ... ]

Why post this? I guess I just wanted to share that there is a lot of hurt and pain and sorrow and desperation out there in the World. People crave hope--they want to know that everything is going to be okay. Sometimes it takes trauma to bring them to this realization, but people want to know that there is a God. Such a harvest.

100% Update: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

I told you it would be hard to keep updates from work. But you didn't believe me. You said it could be done. I said, "No, World, I have to get back to business." You whined, "But we neeeeeeeeeeeeeed you. We need to know what's happening with Pastor Ray."

It's now 10:00pm ... MyBeloved has said goodnight ... Mom should be asleep, but is probably giggling with CalvaryGal ... and I am at TheSelect for the night. Let's get this UPDATE rolling!

Last Night: Dad (and Mom) were taken care of by a very special nurse technician, Tech Spirits. In Mom's own words, "She's awesome. She checked in on us every 2 hours. She was meticulous. She did not miss a beat." Mom also had a good conversation with Nurse B.Anthony1, who has now been renamed Nurse IrishMama because of her spit-fire child. Our respiratory therapist, Respy Mouse, was quiet as a ... you know ... mouse. Here's last night's update:

  • Dad slept well most of the night.
  • No fever.

This Morning: Today, Dad began his WindSprints under the direction of Respy SunShine (back again). By mid-morning, Dr. Rehab 1.0 came in for daily rounds and reported the following:

  • Very pleased that Dad went the night without a fever.
  • Lungs sound a little less congested.
  • Doesn't feel an immediate need to perform the bronchoscopy, as originally ordered.

Mom also asked Dr. Rehab 1.0 about the new antibiotics that SisterFargo was pushing. He indicated that the "gunk cultures" taken the first week had identified the target bacteria and Dad was receiving the appropriate antibiotic. Dr. Rehab 1.0 emphasized onced again, "Slow and boring is good."

This Afternoon: S-Therapy 1.0 stopped by Room 509 today for some "swallowing trials." Dad is not ready for ice yet, but it was reported that he could smile on command. Update on other responses:

  • Dad can stick out his tongue on command.
  • Dad cannot open his mouth all the way.
  • Dad can mouth words, although we struggle to know what those words mean.

This Evening: Dad began the evening with 3 hours of WindSprints. In case you don't remember, that's part of weaning process where he is taken of the LungRobot and is breathing entirely on his own. We are happy to report that both Nurse IrishMama and Tech Spirits are back tonight. The respiratory therapist, Respy GottaGo, was in and out like a flash.

[ ... Just as I was finishing this post ... Nurse Cutz (the former hair-cutter dude) asked me what I was doing up at this time ... I told him about you guys, World, and how you made G&G the best website of year ... He said, "Cool!" ... ]

Tomorrow: How do you expect me to report about tomorrow? It has not happened yet! Good night...
