One Patient to Another

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

If you are in the hospital and you are within a 100 mile radius of Dad's location, you can count on him to be there for you and your family ... comforting, consoling, and praying. When Dad learned that our fellow EarlyBird, Ric "Righty" Young, had suffered a heart attack, Dad wanted to jump out of bed and head across town. Since he couldn't do that, Dad did the next best thing ... he called.

So that's what happened, Dad picked up the phone and called Righty to share a word of encouragement ... from one patient to another. I wasn't there, but I heard they fought over who had the larger scar on their chest.

100% Update: Road to Recovery

I told you that I would tell you about the Road to Recovery ... And it looks like we are very much on our way. The map was drawn by the children in PowerChurch a few weeks ago. Here's what is looks like:

Now, let's start at the beginning of the Road to Recovery ... The "X" marks the spot of where Pastor Ray, or Pappy Rayzor, started this journey ... in a hospital bed ... "Make sure you get your Bible ... food for your tummy & mind." Stage #2 is working out with barbells, to get strong like superman.

Stage #3 is "walking with God and your walker" (... such brilliant little minds ...). Stage #4 is to fill your lungs with the Holy Spirit ... not a trach ...

Stage #5 is for full eye recovery ... to see your sheep! Stage #6 is full hearing recovery ... to hear the World's prayers for you. Stage #7 is full speech recovery ... to speak the truth with your tongue (... not to be confused with tounge ...)

Stage #8 is full mouth recovery ... to each meat with your chompers and smile! Finally, 110% full recovery has you returning to your church.

This is an amazing map, young ones. I only wish the World was as insightful, compassionate and full of faith as you. Thanks for the Road to Recovery!

Okay, Okay ...

The news that you have been waiting for ... The hospital has a proposed release date for Dad of Nov. 20. ... What? You want me to speak up. Okay ...

The hospital has a proposed release date for Dad of Nov. 20.

This translates into: the RehabTeam says that Dad should be ready to be released in about 10 days, provided he reaches certain milestones in therapy, provided his case manager works out the final details, and provided we can do an extreme home makeover to accomodate Dad. We will let you know!

Are You Sure?

You: Yes! Tell us!

Are You Ready?

You: Yes.

Righty Update: Logistics

You've heard about our friend, Ric "Righty" Young, who had a severe heart attack two nights ago. He remains in critical care at TheHills, but we were able to see him last night and this morning. For the past two years, Righty had been part of our men's bible study on early Tuesday mornings.
Righty's wife, Lefty, was able to go home last night and get some rest. The EarlyBirds met at the hospital this morning for our weekly ritual. In true-Righty fashion ( ... meaning if you know him you will understand this ... ), Righty called my cell phone from his hospital bed at about 6:05am ( ... he was late after all ... ) and said, "What are the logistics for this morning?" Above is a picture of a normal brain. Below is a picture of Righty's brain ...
You're a funny guy, Righty. We love you. To all of Righty's friends and family, he is in good spirits ( ... that's not surprising knowing Ric ... ). He looked like he had a rough night, but he is able to talk and see you with both eyes ... unlike our one-eyed Pastor. Righty reported that he does not know when or if they will put in the internal pacemaker. We will let you know once we hear from our on-the-scene reporter, Lefty.

That's Not Right (#1)

That's not right ... a collection of stories, events, and incidents that are just ... not right! Today's TNR story comes from a conversation between Dad and BigVolFan a few days ago. Let's see what Dad had to say ...

Dad: ( ... in his best Pacino/Brando voice ... ) VolFan, come here!

BVF: Yes, Ray.

Dad: Did the water bill come in for the church?

BVF: Yes, I think so.

Dad: How much was it?

BVF: I don' t know. Off the top of my head, I think it was about $300.

Dad: That's not right. That's too much. Something's wrong. We gotta do something about that water bill.
________________________________

No, Dad, you're not right! Worry about your recovery. Let someone else worry about that water bill.

Have Prayers, Will Travel

Monday, November 10, 2008

The EarlyBirds ... a group of men in Nashville who meet every Tuesday to read the Word, pray and fellowship ... have been mobile for the last 8 weeks. We've going where Dad has been. Now, one of our very own, Ric Young (a.k.a. Righty) had a severe heart attack last night and remains in critical care. Since Righty can't come to us, we will go to him. If you want to join us, we will be at the critical care unit family waiting room on the second floor at Southern Hills Medical Center (... TheHills ...) tomorrow morning at 6:00am.

I talked to Righty tonight and he looks good. I told him that since he is already at the hospital, it will be the first Tuesday morning that he will actually be there on time ... he smiled!

Another's ViolentSilence (#2)

You've heard about our ViolentSilence. You've heard about Another's ViolentSilence (#1). I am sad to report about Another's ViolentSilence (#2). Last night, Righty, one of our regular attenders to the early morning men's group ( ... we call ourselves the EarlyBirds ... ) had a severe heart attack. Here's what happened:

Most of you know Righty, a member of Flat Rock Squares. Please keep him in you prayers. Righty suffered a massive heart attack last night. Righty and Lefty (his wife) had fallen asleep while watching a Ball game on the TV. Lefty woke to Righty making a funny noise and jerking. She woke Righty and he got up and walked to
the bathroom, checked his sugar and took his medicine. Lefty noticed his color was very pale & his pulse was weak. Righty would not let her call 911. He walked to the car and she drove him to the hospital and they transported him to TheHills.

Righty made it thru the surgery, about 3:30 we were able to go back & see him. He had a blockage behind his heart and they put a stint in. The doctor said he made it fine thru the first quarter. He does have some other heart related problems that he felt like they could treat with medication. We do not know at this time if they will have to go back in and put in a pace maker or not. At this time he is hooked to a pacemaker, ventilator and other stuff. He has opened his eyes and squeezed Lefty's hand. They will be running more tests today.

Please pray for Righty and Lefty.

God is Still Here!

You may have thought that ... with all the logo contests, "Rooting for Ray" pics and "Behind-the-Scenes" peeks ... we forgot about God in our lives. In the words of Romans 3:4, NO WAY DUDE!

International Standard Version (©2008)
Of course not! God is true, even if everyone else is a liar. As it is written, "You are right when you speak, and win your case when you go into court."

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written, "THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS, AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED."

GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995)
That would be unthinkable! God is honest, and everyone else is a liar, as Scripture says, "So you hand down justice when you speak, and you win your case in court."

King James Bible
God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

American King James Version
God forbid: yes, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That you might be justified in your sayings, and might overcome when you are judged.

American Standard Version
God forbid: yea, let God be found true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy words, And mightest prevail when thou comest into judgment.

Bible in Basic English
In no way: but let God be true, though every man is seen to be untrue; as it is said in the Writings, That your words may be seen to be true, and you may be seen to be right when you are judged.

Douay-Rheims Bible
But God is true; and every man a liar, as it is written, That thou mayest be justified in thy words, and mayest overcome when thou art judged.

Darby Bible Translation
Far be the thought: but let God be true, and every man false; according as it is written, So that thou shouldest be justified in thy words, and shouldest overcome when thou art in judgment.

English Revised Version
God forbid: yea, let God be found true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy words, And mightest prevail when thou comest into judgment.

Webster's Bible Translation
By no means: verily let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mayest be justified in thy sayings, and mayest overcome when thou art judged.

Weymouth New Testament
No, indeed; let us hold God to be true, though every man should prove to be false. As it stands written, "That Thou mayest be shown to be just in the sentence Thou pronouncest, and gain Thy cause when Thou contendest."

World English Bible
May it never be! Yes, let God be found true, but every man a liar. As it is written, "That you might be justified in your words, and might prevail when you come into judgment."

Young's Literal Translation
Let it not be! and let God become true, and every man false, according as it hath been written, 'That Thou mayest be declared righteous in Thy words, and mayest overcome in Thy being judged.'

Just last night, Dad was telling me to share with the fellow sheeppups ( ... church leaders ... ) that he is praying for them daily, that he is going to be alright, and that Jesus is still Lord! So, if you are wondering whether we lost our focus ... the answer is, "No, we are still pointed true north."

Conversations with an Addict

I was talking with a G&G Addict last evening and I gotta say you people really are sick!

... If you are new-here-today or new-here-within-the-past-few-weeks, you may not know what a G&G Addict is ... First, it is a delicious name we give to those readers who are compelled to neglect their work, family, and sunlight while they wait for the next post here at www.growingandgrowing.com … Next, most of them got addicted as infants right after the Violent Silence (... Dad's accident ...), while others became addicted later in life. What am I saying? It's only been 7 weeks! They're all infants! Finally, the best way to tell you about an addict is to simply show you. Here is a really sick one ... I've tried to teach that one and others about being impatient ... but it did not work too well ...

So this G&G Addict approached me. We will call her OuterCircleChic for now. We had the following conversation:

OCC: I can't handle this 1 or 2 posts a day!

Self: Yeah, it's hard juggling family, work, hospital visits and G&G writing.

OCC: No, I don't think you understand. I won't accept this 1 or 2 posts a day!

Self: Yeah, I could probably do this full time if I could simply quit my job and quit my family.

OCC: ... (taking out a dull butter knife and putting it to my throat) ... No, I don't think you understand. YOU WILL POST MORE THAN 1 or 2 POSTS A DAY! YOU WILL GO BACK TO POSTING MORE! RIGHT?

Self: ... (struggling to breath) ... Right ... is today soon enough?
.................................

UPDATE (9:15am): Just got a rather threatening email and text from someone ... let's just say their name rhymes with PouterPircleTric ... I am supposed to clarify they only want 3-4 posts a day ... and it was a plastic knife ...

PrayerWarriors 1 ... Meanies 0

Sunday, November 09, 2008

It's just been a really busy weekend ... actually, my first full weekend back with the kids. We played alot and we even went to see Pappy Rayzor! I should have told you sooner, but you have to believe me when I say that I was not holding out on you ...

PrayerWarrior1 made it home (Nashsville, TN, USA) safe on Friday evening. PrayerWarriorT00 was so happy to see his beloved back in his arms. We will let you know more about her travels to NotAmerica and the Meanies who were hunting for our friend.

Welcome Home PW1 ...

100% Update: GamePlan Update

You heard about the first night Dad and Mom made a GamePlan. You have seen all the updates to that GamePlan. Well, we kept the list when we moved to WorthyRehab ... only the list has gotten longer. Here's the new additions:
<

Another Baby Coming!

Saturday, November 08, 2008

NO!!! ... NOT OURS!!! Are you crazy??? We just had another one and he is 100% Baby Boy. This one belongs to MusicMan, SingingSoul and JrActive ... After 33 months of waiting, their daughter WorthWaiting is ready to be picked up in China. She is 9 months old and weighs 13 pounds. Our friends hope to travel in late December to get her. You can follow their journey here.

Congrats! We are so excited for you guys!

100% Update: Stitches

This is Stitches ... not to be confused with the internal eye "stitches" that Dr. OcularDude ... who I found out is really an ocular plastic surgeon ... put in Dad's eye on Friday afternoon. I told you that the CyclopsSurgery was "probable" ... Well, that surgery is now official and it occurred Friday afternoon.

The right eye will remain stitched closed for a few months to allow the 6th and 7th nerve to heal. At that point, Dr. OcularDude and Dr. NewEyeGuy will determine whether Dad needs a cornea transplant.

Already, the surgery has "somewhat" lessened the pain in Dad's eye ... but it will take awhile to be pain free. Thanks for the prayers.

Dad Is ... He Is ...

Friday, November 07, 2008

Dad is 100% Recovery ... He is 100% Baby Boy.

100% Update: Cyclops

Dad had two doctor appointments scheduled for today: (1) Dr. NewEyeGuy, a cornea specialist who is supposed to take over for Dr. EyeGal; and (2) Dr. BoneFixer, the orthopedic surgeon who saw Dad from the first days at the TraumaCondo.

The appointment with NewEyeGuy resulted in an emergency appointment, scheduled for later this afternoon, with Dr. OcularDude ... who will probably temporarily stitch Dad's right eye closed ... which will remain closed for the next couple of months. [ ... Dad can still sleep with one eye open on Christmas Eve to look out for Santa stealing the cookies and leaving gifts, though ... ] Again, this CyclopsSurgery is "probable" ... and not "certain" ... we will let you know later. The appointment with BoneFixer was rescheduled.

In the meantime, NewEyeGuy said: (1) that he reviewed Dad's medical records from Day1; (2) that he was amazed at Dad's progress given the substantial brain injury; and (3) that even if Dad's eye does not recover, he should be thankful to have escaped such a tragic accident with only a busted eye. [ ... little does NewEyeGuy know about our 100% recovery plan and the Almighty means to achieve that goal ... ]

Awesomeness

This is why I love Sr.Word ... he is always up to date with the latest Christian music and movie releases. He even sends good Word stuff for the kiddos ... like Kung Fu Panda ... which is being released this weekend on DVD. Check out this link for Bible Study and activities prepared by WordDistribution.

Another Funky Prayer Request

Dad needs your prayers that these ( ... above ... ) work.

"In everything, let your requests be made known unto God," says Paul. (Phillipians 4:6). In other words, nothing is too small or too great to be handled in prayer.

The Iris

As you walk down the halls of Dad's new habilitation facility ( ... we call it WorthyRehab ... ), you will see the above picture outside some of the doors. Why is there a picture of an iris on some of these doors? Does this help?

The inflorescences are fan-shaped and contain one or more symmetrical, six-lobed flowers. These grow on a pedicel or lack a footstalk. The three sepals, which are spreading or droop downwards, are referred to as falls.

Thanks for the info, Wiki. Yep, that's right ... it's all in the name of the three sepals ... falls ... or in Dad's case, "Fall Protection" ... it's notice to the World (and more particularly the staff) to use precaution when transporting Dad and to take extra fall protection measures. Neat, huh?

WorthyRehab: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

Hello my friends. I know that you non-Nashvillians have been dying to see the new place. Well, jump into the MovingBox and let's tack a ride to the Second Floor.

video

That was a quick ride, huh? The rooms ... so spacious ... includes a mom and a dad in them. No little bars of soap in the bathroom, though. And the hallways in this place are never-ending. Reminds me of being lost in the Overlook Hotel ... from The Shining ... only a lot cleaner! Take a look for yourself ...

video

And finally, here is Dad's wall of love ... which includes pictures of all his family and loved ones. Remind me to tell you about that Roadmap to Recovery ...

100% Update: The Great Outdoors

Thursday, November 06, 2008

It's been almost seven weeks since the accident ... which also means it's been almost seven weeks since Dad has been outside. Today ... that long run ... ended. Yep, Dad and Mom sat outside in the courtyard at WorthyRehab. We will post some pics of the courtyard later, but you know that afternoon breeze in the sun felt good.

Sk8ter Goes to Work

I know that for some of you in the World it is hard to keep up with our lingo here at G&G. ( ... Tough cookies! ... Is that even a phrase? ... ) We still love you and we will talk (or write) v..e..r..y.......s..l..o..w..l..y...

Anyway, one of Dad's roomies at the TraumaCondo was a hip kid named Sk8ter, who had a serious brain injury the same weekend as Dad's ViolentSilence. We met Sk8ter's family, we cried with them, and we prayed with them. We even found that that one of you went to school with them. Just as prayers for Dad have been answered, so have prayers for Sk8ter:

Sk8ter went back to work ( ... a Pharmacy ... ) on Monday evening, 4 hour shifts, to build back up his stamina he'll probably be working 3 evenings a week. His boss said he did very well, wouldn't have even known he'd had an injury if not for the helmet, and he also expressed how good it is to have him back. Amen to that!

On Wednesday November 12th is our appointment with the neuro surgeon, and we hope he will be so pleased with how everything looks he'll want to put Sk8ter back together again. Thanks again for all the continued prayers. We couldn't have made it without them! Sk8ter's Mom

Sk8ter, in your Mom's own words, Amen to that!

Good News ... Bad News

Good News: Dad just called me on my cell phone, which means he is coherent enough to pick up a phone, remember my number, dial my number, and hear me on the other end of the line.

Bad News: Dad is in extreme pain in his right eye. The new eye doctor has not come to see him and there is no relief in sight ( ... pun intended ... ).

Please pray for immediate relief from the pain Dad's right eye.

SideBar: Prayer in (Law) Practice

At SideBar, we tell you what's been going on in our work life as an attorney ... that is, the information we are allowed to tell you ...

Did you know that you could pray for your everyday tasks? You don't need a major catastrophe in your life to seek God's presence, peace, power. Need help with a test? Pray. Need patience with the screaming kids? Pray. Need clarity of mind to help cross-examine a witness? Pray. Need a little confidence as you walk into the classroom full of kids before the bell rings? Pray.

That's what Dad did for me all last week during my trial. Yesterday, we received a nice email asking Self how the trial went. The most I can tell you at this point is .... IT'S DONE! ... for now, that is. Let me explain:

There are many types of trials, but the main distinction is whether it will be a "jury trial" (in front of a jury) or a "bench trial" (in front of a judge). There are civil trials, criminal trials, administrative trials. They can be in state court, federal court, or in front of a state or federal administrative agency.

Mine was a state administrative agency. It was before an administrative law judge. Other than that, it looked just like Law and Order ... with witnesses, oversized photos, objections ( ... Your Honor, I strenuously object! ... ), opening arguments and closing arguments. ( ... There was some silent prayer going on there, too ... )

Now, why is my trial done "for now"... ? Because we are going to file post-trial briefs, which should take a few months. Then, the judge will issue a written decision. So, the big trial is done ... the writing part will come ...

Thanks for asking. If you have any other SideBar questions about our legal system, or about why Horatio on CSI Miami does not follow the Fourth Amendment, send me a note here.

Rooting for Ray (#22)

If you are "Rooting for Ray" then send us your pics here. Today's FeaturedFoto is from SouthernDrawl and JrKatz ... who happened to be at the zoo this past weekend while they were Rooting for Ray. I have to say that this duo has invested a lot in Hallmark stock recently because they have sent a ton of cards to Mom and Dad ... SouthernDrawl was under the weather and did not want to spread the germies. You ladies are crazy ... and great!!!

Whether you are family, friend, or perfect stranger,
we want to hear (and see) from you!

100% Update: Tidbits

Wednesday, November 05, 2008

Now that Dad has entered a rehabilitation program that will have him running a marathon by the end of the year, it is hard to get anything but tidbits of information on his status during the day. In other words, you probably know more information about Dad's status over the past two days than I do ... and you are located all over the World. Here's my shot at giving you a late-night update of tidbits:

  1. Meals are way better at WorthyRehab than the other place. Dad always laughed at the food "over there" because it was a portion size made for a small army. Over there, he wanted baked fish, but would get pureed chicken. Over there, food would arrive anywhere between "on time" to "two hours early or late." Here, portions are the right size, the hot food is served hot, the cold food is served cold, and based upon one day's menu Dad got what he ordered.

  2. Dad has a roommate at WorthyRehab. It takes every ounce of energy in my body not to get upset, but you will never guess who makes up the other half of this Odd Couple ... yep, that dude! Can you believe it? What a small world. That dude moved to WorthyRehab a few hours before Dad and landed in Dad's room. What a small, messed up world!

  3. Dr. Groovin' ... Dad's rehabilitation doctor at the new place ... gave Dad a full assessment within an hour of moving into the new digs. I have to be honest ... that test was hard for me ... and Dad passed with flying colors. What is the date? What is the time? Do you know why you are here? How many fingers am I holding up? Name as many four-legged animals you can in a one minute. Remember the words: umbrella, train, ball ... and I will ask you to repeat them in about 10 minutes. [BTW ... Dad got that one right ... I only remembered the umbrella-ella-ella-eh-eh-eh and the ball ...]

  4. The first night apart for Dad and Mom ... what wonderful love birds ... was without incident. Thanks to OuterCircleChic, Mom made it home safely. Thanks to ZZZZZMeds, Dad was able to get some sleep. Thanks to your prayers, the evening apart was as best as could be expected.

  5. Dad's eye remains the most painful part of his body ... even worse than the broken tail bone, broken pelvic, broken ribs, broken clavicle, countless cranial fractures, blood clot in left arm, and heart repair ... it all comes down to that eye! We need to move that to the top of the prayer list right now.

Thanks for checking in ... tomorrow we will have a little tour of Dad's room.

Give Me a Break!

Painting: Noon: Rest From Work (After Millet), Vincent van Gogh
Picture: WebMuseum

Dad had another epi-fannie this morning ... not so much on a spiritual level ... but on a personal recovery level. Dad realized after his first round of physical therapy that things were going to be a little different at WorthyRehab ... as in, MORE INTENSE! In Dad's own words, here's teh realization:

"At the other place, I had to get out of my bed to get a break ... Here, I have to get back into my bed to get a break."

Pray for Peace for Another

We talked earlier last week about Sunflower Greeters ... the impact that Sunflower and her family have had on our lives ... and the need for a miracle in their lives. The Greeters are truly an inspiration to us as they walk through their ViolentSilence ... this week, they entered a new chapter of their lives, but you will have to read it in their words:

Within the last week, Sunflower's doctors have communicated that there is nothing (medically) that can be done to improve her current condition or outcome.

Many times throughout her life, Sunflower expressed that she did not want to live in a non-functional state, sustained only by life support.

Consistent with Sunflower's wishes, this morning she was removed from life support technology and has moved to the Spartanburg Regional Hospice House where she is surrounded by family. She is resting very peacefully, continuing to be ministered to by the music of Immanuel Bible Church.

Please continue to lift us all up in prayer as we continue to walk day by day on this journey.

Please continue to pray for our friends during this difficult time. You can leave a note for them here.

100% Update: The Transfer

Ever wonder what a "transfer" of one recovering messed up dude looks like? Well, here's your chance ... from the departure ...

video

... to loading up in the OrangeSpeedRacer ...

video

... from there, Dad took a little ride to his new location. We will give you a little behind-the-scenes tour later this week. But for now, if you want to see Dad (and Mom), you can visit them at the WorthyRehab, Room 2004A ... You can find directions here. Visiting hours are strict ... not before ... not after ... 11:00am to 8:00pm.

1 of 100s ...

Mom and Dad have received 100s of cards and notes and emails from around the country (and World). Here's one from MusicMan and his MusicPupils, who wrote Dad an overized card with lots of words of encouragement.

Thanks for all the fun notes, MusicPupils!

GodThruMan (#19)

GodThruMan #18 continues to WOW us ... as in speechless ... and if you really know me or Mom ... that's is quite a feat! [ ... BTW, how are you doing RightChoice? I hope you are still following our adventure. It's been a doozy these past few weeks and I am sure we will have lots of fun stories to tell. Let us know directly or through OkieLuv how you are ... ]

World, we are happy to report the sighting of another GodThruMan instance. If you are new here, then let us explain it ... GodThruMan is a moment when God works through man to demonstrate His existence, presence or power.

Yesterday, Dad experienced GodThruMan in the least expected way. Dad and Mom had just finished talking with Dr. EyeGal ... Dad was visibly upset about the who eye thing ... (1) the recommendation that he needed another eye surgery down the road; and (2) the fact that Dr. EyeGal may or may not be able to follow Dad's progress depending upon hospital privileges. Mom's words of encouragement fell on Dad's deaf ears.

Enter stage right ... Technician HandHold ... a bouncy nurse technician who brought a smile and a word of encouragement.

"Why you cryin' Pastor Ray?" she calmly asks.

In his best Pacino-Brando voice, Dad explains why he is upset. He continues to cry.

"Pastor Ray ..." HandHold says as she takes a hold of Dad's hand, "... you don't need to worry about all those things. First, it's okay to have those feelings ... it's perfectly normal. But you don't need to worry because ... God is righteous, so He's never wrong ... and ... God is wise, so He doesn't make mistakes ... and what that means with your eye is that He will not let your eye go untreated ... look at everything else He brought you through ... and He won't let a doctor make the wrong recommendation, because He doesn't make mistakes ... "

Dad's weeping subsides.

GodThruMan calms.

Dad thanks HandHold the next day.

100% Update: Anxiety Settles In

Tuesday, November 04, 2008

Dad has settled into his new room ... and so has his anxiety. How can I explain that a little better for you? Mom (or a representative of Mom) has been by Dad's side 24 hours a day ever since the first day of his accident ( ... the ViolentSilence ... ). Tonight will be the first night Dad is on his own ... in other words, no overnight visitors or family members can stay at the new rehabilitation facility (... WorthyRehab ...)

Mom certainly is not ready to let go.

Dad is anxious to let go ... but I think understands that this is the next step in his rehabilitation.

Here's where you can help. Pray for the following:
  1. 6-8 hours of rest/sleep for Dad.
  2. 0 hours of anxiety for Dad.
  3. 0 hours of anxiety for Mom.
  4. 100% relief from EyePain for Dad.
  5. 100% energy for the overnight staff.

Thanks ...

100% Update: 3:00 O'Clock

3:00 pm ... That's what the clock says ... and my spies are telling me that Dad is going to be transferred to WorthyRehab today at 3:00 pm ... the new chapter begins this evening ...

Rooting for Ray (#21)

If you are "Rooting for Ray" then send us your pics here. Today's FeaturedFoto is not a picture of Rooters ... but instead is a picture of the sign prepared by a bunch of Rooters ... Personally, I think they are scared to appear in a picture together ...

Please send your "Rooting for Ray" pictures here.
Whether you are family, friend, or perfect stranger,
we want to hear (and see) from you!

Yea, Right?!?!?!

What's a brother gotta do to get a little baked fish for lunch around here?

Apparently for Dad, the answer to that question is ... "NOTHING ... YOU'RE NOT GOING TO GET FISH, PATIENT 5509, OKAY!"

Kinda gives this flyer from food services a new meaning to the word service ...

X Marks the Spot ... Cont'd

Do you remember how Dad wanted a "game plan" for recovery? Well, we are still updating his list. And when we find out about the next chapter in his rehabilitation, I am sure that we are going to be adding to this list. In the meantime, do you have any additions? List them below in the comments.

23. Sell Yoda costume on E-bay when I get access to my computer again.

24. Participate in Tennessee re-count of Presidential election.

Dad's Epi-Fannie

Monday, November 03, 2008

I know that's not a word, but it has been part of Dad's vocabulary for as long as I can remember. The real word is epiphany, which means:

1 capitalized : January 6 observed as a church festival in commemoration of the coming of the Magi as the first manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles or in the Eastern Church in commemoration of the baptism of Christ

2: an appearance or manifestation especially of a divine being

3 a (1): a usually sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something (2): an intuitive grasp of reality through something (as an event) usually simple and striking (3): an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure b: a revealing scene or moment

Definition from
Merry and Web.

Dad's epiphany came this weekend as BroBill was praying ... "Thanks God that Ray lived."

Dad immediately began to cry. Mom asks, "Why are you crying, dear?"

Dad responds, "I just realized that my brothers and sisters came to Nashville because I was .. or could have ... died ..."

Dad proceeded to ask about what happened. Mom shares her personal journey about relying on the Sovereignty of God. While she asked God to save her husband, Mom really claimed God's Sovereignty in her life "... whatever happens ... whatever happens ..."

Dad remains speechless, trembling and crying ... Dad wonders how God is going to use this accident ... Dad wonders what he is going to do to further God's kingdom having survived such intense trauma ... Dad continues to cry ... feeling overwhelmed by God's choosing him for this journey and in the way God has been healing every part of his body.

Dad, I don't have all the answers ... In fact, I rarely have a coherent thought scribbled on these pages ... but perhaps our friend Paul would tell you that Christ's work in you ... and this family ... and this church ... and this journey ... and this ViolentSilence ... will be revealed to you and the World in God's perfect timing. The key is the revelation of Christ ... through you ... to others ...

"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us." (Romans 8:18)

100% Update: Don't Count Your Chickens ...

... before they hatch.

That's the only advice we have for you when you read this post. At the end of last week, Dr. Rehab 1.0 said that Dad was almost ready for the next stage ... intense rehabilitation services. So let's review where we have been and where we are going:
  • Chapter 1 = Major Trauma at the TraumaCondo
  • Chapter 2 = Acute Rehabilitation (and Ventilation Weaning) at TheSelect
  • Chapter 3 = Intense Rehabilitation (Physical, Occupational, Speech) at WorthyRehab

Dr. Rehab wanted to keep Dad at TheSelect through the weekend to make sure he fully recovered from the eye surgery. In the meantime, the friendly people from WorthyRehab came to see whether Dad "fit in" with their people ... a kind of assessment of sorts. Answer = Yes, Dad "fits in" with their people. In fact, their people were happy that Dad was working with Lil'Bruiser because they know she is a little bruiser with her patients and that Dad won't slack off during rehabilitation.

So ... don't count your chickens before they hatch ... but there is a rumor that Dad will be entering a new chapter soon ... a new chapter of intense rehabilitation at WorthyRehab ... we will let you know as soon as we find out it is official.

Side Effects ...

You heard the news yesterday that the RehabTeam removed Dad's trach tube, right? Well, one of the side effects of removing the trach tube is that Dad lost his Yoda-voice ...

But that's okay ... now Dad sounds like a cross between Scent of a Woman-Al Pacino ...

... and God Father-Marlon Brando ...

TheSelect: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

You've been behind the scenes at the TraumaCondo. Last week, we showed you a little teaser of TheSelect: A Behind-the-Scenes-Look ... We, along with Nelson, wonder how many LeftOvers or HurtOnes found some new faith as a result of walking this cross-over. Let's check the rest of Dad's crib.

Here's a map overview of the land ... [Note: Not drawn to scale ... ]

Here's the sign we saw on the night of the Fall from Bed ...

.... when we were going to get some of these ...

... and me playing with my camera ... that was a fun (NOT) night!

Here's the MovingBox that takes you up to Dad's floor ... 5 ... is the magic number ..

At TheSelect, there is even an indoor walking path ... well ... you can walk ... indoors ... and keep track of your distance ... but you cannot train for a marathon here.

Finally, here is the TranquilEntrance ... a peaceful scenery that welcomes you to TheSelect.

We hope that you can come by to see the great amenities at TheSelect ... and Dad too.

Prayers for PrayerWarrior1

Sensitive Nature, Tennessee -- Yesterday, we asked you to pray for PROTECTION for PrayerWarrior1. We could not say much other than she needed TheTruth's protection. We have an update on what is happening.

PrayerWarrior1 went to NotAmerica to SpreadtheWord. PrayerWarrior1 and friends went specifically to NotAmerica to help the WeeOnes that are trained hurt others for the Meanies. Unfortunately, the Meanies in NotAmerica do not like SpreadingtheWord. As you can imagine, PrayerWarrior1 was in danger.

Over the past two days, the Meanies found out that PrayerWarrior1 believes in TheTruth, is SpreadingtheWord, and wants to save the WeeOnes. The Meanies started looking specifically for PrayerWarrior1 by name. PrayerWarrior1 was able to play Hide'n'Seek for a couple of days. PrayerWarrior1 was going to travel by Thomas and Sir Topham Hatt ... as opposed to by Knight Rider ... but as of this morning has gone by GreyHound. Given the ScaryStress, please talk to TheTruth on behalf of PrayerWarrior1 for the following:

  1. SafePassage for PrayerWarrior1, who is supposed to catch a FlyingBus back to "us" on the 7th.

  2. For Magic Johnson, who has been questioned by the Meanies a couple of times. They are asking for the TreasureMap showing the Crib of PrayerWarrior1.

  3. For the 12 WeeOnes being helped by PrayerWarrior1 ... some them ran from the Meanies and, of course, remain in danger.

  4. For the nation of NotAmerica ... 25 years of civil war ... for a Truce.

Thanks for praying for PrayerWarrior1.

Trick and Treat!

Yesterday, I said that we had a trick-or-treat for you. Well, actually we have both a trick and a treat. Ready?

Trick: Dad can get in and out of bed on his own, with the assistance of a walker.

Treat: Dad can now breath entirely on his own, without the assistance of a tracheotomy tube or oxygen NoseTube ( ... nasal cannula ... ). That's right, the respiratory team took out Dad's trach tube this morning.

( ... If no one else is listening, I will tell you a secret ... Don't tell ... Mom sneaks into bed next to Dad for a few minutes ... shhhhhh! ... Don't tell! ... )

  • Tuesday (10/28): No technicians around to help Mom help Dad ... Mom turns from Bill Bixby to Hulk on the world ... Dad prays for Mom and calms her down; during occupational therapy Dad puts on his own gown and shirt ... Great! ... maybe Dad can get a job as a gown or shirt inspector ... put those little pieces of paper with numbers on them ... or "Inspected by SheepDog"; Mom almost turns from Bill Bixby to Hulk again because Nurse Spider is back ... and shouldn't be assigned to Dad ... all works out in the end, though.

  • Wednesday (10/29): Pastor Butcher, who cuts hair and shaves beards for the sick as his ministry, comes by to pray with and cut hair for Dad; Dr. Rehab 1.0 remains impressed with Dad's daily triumphs; Dad's BubblePatch, which along with a new haircut, reminds us of Bono.

  • Thursday (10/30): Dad walked down the hall today ... twice ... with his new Sneaks! ... You already heard about before, during and after the surgery ...

  • Friday (10:31): Dr. EyeGal stops by to check on Dad's recovery from surgery ... she says that he will need a cornea transplant or graft down the road ... she is amazed at Dad's overall recovery from "catastrophic" injuries ... EyeGal agrees that Dad's healing came from prayer ( ... thanks World for your part ... ); Nos. 1-5 came trick-or-treating at Dad's room ( ... I am looking at Mom's little notebook ... it says that Dad cries after we leave because he misses us so much ... we love you, too, Dad ... )

100% Update: AP Newswire

Nashville, TN -- Ray DeVries, a local pastor involved in a near fatal accident on September 20, 2008, continues to mystify and baffle his doctors and rehabilitation team. On this first day of November, SheepDog (as his congregants and friends call him) took 300 steps down the hallway with his physical therapy team, Lil'Bruiser and Tiny.

Not only has SheepDog taken great strides with this feet, his lungs continue to grow stronger and stronger. "Ray had his tracheotomy plugged yesterday and he has done so well that we are going to recommend taking out his tracheotomy tube tomorrow," says respiratory therapist SilverHair.

"Tonight is the real test," says Self, who will be staying with SheepDog this evening. "We have been praying for sleep for Dad and I am confident that God will answer our prayers tonight."

Sleep well, SleepDog ... Sleep, well.
